Psoriasis Natural Remedies
Psoriasis natural remedies are everywhere. Which ones actually work?
First realize that psoriasis sufferers have different psoriasis triggers. The key to natural treatments for psoriasis, therefore, is to discover which psoriasis natural remedies work for your unique skin situation.
Do Natural Remedies for Psoriasis Actually Work?
As mentioned on the other Begin Within Natural Skincare skin problem pages, in my nutritional practice, one of the things I never promise my clients is a remedy or cure for anything. First it is outside the scope of a holistic nutritionist's profession to diagnose or treat any ailment.
Additionally, most of the work nutritionists do is to work alongside a client to correct system imbalances (i.e. intestinal, digestive, endocrine) through lifestyle choices such as diet and supplementation. Rather than "curing" or providing a "remedy" for a particular ailment, we simply help a client provide nutrients to the body that in turn, allow the body to correct imbalances and heal itself.
So, with that disclaimer as a foundation, are there psoriasis natural remedies that work? Probably. Once you understand the causes of psoriasis and your own unique triggers, however, don't simply go looking for a magic bullet cure—natural or otherwise. Because of the way psoriasis works, it seems wisest to take the small steps that strengthen overall body systems—and in particular the ones that help reduce your particular psoriasis trigger responses—in an attempt to have psoriasis go into permanent or, at the least, long-term, remission. What do Psoriasis Natural Remedies Look Like?
Natural treatments for psoriasis cover a wide range of factors, both internal—what you put IN your body—and external—what you put ON your body. They can be as simple as removing a couple of food items (i.e. citrus, animal fat) from your diet or as complex as a complete gluten-free and vegetarian diet. Bottom line, start simply, evaluate results and then adjust as needed. Here's a "good place to begin" psoriasis natural remedies list:
- improve diet—an increase in water and veggie intake and an elimination of processed foods provides overall improvement for most psoriasis sufferers. In addition look to see if eliminating particular trigger foods (i.e. fats found in dairy products and grain fed meats, citrus, refined grains and sugars) provides relief.
- bring balance to gut bacteria—pay particular attention to Begin Within Natural Skincare's pages on Candida Symptoms and remedies.
- avoid psoriasis triggers (i.e. pay attention to and eliminate particular foods, stressors or topicals that seem to exacerbate psoriasis symptoms)
- provide necessary supplemental nutrients that allow the body to successfully deal with some of psoriasis' auto-immune system elements (i.e. omega 3 EPA oils, glyconutrients)
- if Candida is an issue, use anti-fungal homeopathics and/or herbs.
- discover topicals that work for you—both to relieve itch as well as dryness (i.e. psoriasis natural remedies include avoiding synthetic chemicals in soaps, shampoos and body creams and only using the best skin care products that support skin health).
- deal properly with stress—research has shown that stress-reduction techniques help relieve psoriasis symptoms; look at prayer, meditation, counseling or helpful stress reduction tools such as Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT).
Home Remedies for Psoriasis
While using nutrition and cleansing to help bring correction internally, there are a variety of natural products and practises that can help topically with psoriasis.
You may need to try several suggestions or rotate products used to find what works best but these natural remedies are certainly worth a try.
Products that can be helpful in soothing psoriasis lesions include:
- organic coconut oil (i.e. Tropical Traditions, Garden of Life or Alpha brands)
- organic flaxseed oil
- aloe (right from the plant is best!)
- alcohol-free goldenseal extract
- the yolks of organic eggs (thinned with a little water).
Additional suggestions would be to place poultices (i.e. yellow dock, nettle leaves, sarsaparilla, chaparral or dandelion) on areas of psoriasis outbreak. Dry brushing (both full body brushing as well as simply brushing psoriasis scales) can also be helpful.
If you use commercial skin creams, hair products or cosmetics, avoid any products that contain synthetic chemicals. Instead ensure your personal care products are certified organic, simply made and contain ingredients knows to be soothing to dry, sensitive skin.
Correcting the imbalance of good to bad bacteria in the gut and allowing the intestinal tract to heal through a diet full of nutrients and appropriate supplements is the first “begin within” step for dealing with psoriasis. By using only natural, healing products on the skin as a way of supporting the external factor in skin health, body imbalances should begin to be corrected and body systems (i.e. digestive, skin) begin to be restored.
Finally, be sure to get sufficient amount of healthy sun exposure (i.e. not in the hottest time of the day, do not burn, ensure sufficient essential fatty acid intake) as that too can be very beneficial in managing psoriasis outbreaks. In addition, there is some evidence that UVB photo therapy, can be a helpful tool in the array of psoriasis natural remedies.
Tailor-make your psoriasis natural remedies formula, in accordance with your own unique triggers and needs, and you will be headed in the right direction. Your journey to healthy skin will take some time, especially if your skin and gut imbalances have been long-standing, but you should be well on your way!
