Natural Cures for Diaper Rash

Which natural cures for diaper rash really work? Figure out what causes diaper rash, use the right natural cures for diaper rash and calm, clear skin will be your reward.
Natural Cures for Diaper Rash Because the causes of diaper rash are varied, it is important to understand the contributing factors to your child's or an adult case of diaper rash before determining how to best determine a home remedy for the rash. Once you have determined whether or not the diaper rash is a result of antibiotic use, a change in laundry soap, infrequent diaper changes, ill-fitting diapers or diaper covers, eczema, psoriasis or a yeast overgrowth, then proper natural cures for diaper rash can be started.

Treating Diaper Rash

Before making recommendations for diaper rash remedies, however, first a reminder of my usual Begin Within Natural Skincare site "cure" disclaimer. In my nutritional practice, one of the things I never promise my clients is a remedy or cure for anything, including natural cures for diaper rash. First it is outside the scope of a holistic nutritionist's profession to diagnose or treat any ailment.

Secondly, most of the work nutritionists do is to work alongside a client to correct system imbalances (i.e. intestinal, digestive, endocrine) through lifestyle choices such as diet and supplementation. Rather than "curing" or providing a "remedy" for a particular ailment, we simply help a client provide nutrients to the body that in turn, allow the body to correct imbalances and heal itself.

With those conditions in mind, however, there are certain dietary changes, supplements and topical considerations that can be helpful in the holistic management of diaper rash.

Dietary Recommendations

Natural cures for diaper rash almost always begin with dietary change. With infants and small children, dietary recommendations are obviously quite limited as their overall food intake and food variety is quite limited.

Breast-feeding moms should review the information on Candida and, if appropriate, follow a Candida Foods List-based dietary plan. If child is formula-fed, find a yeast-free, sugar-free formula and rotate formulas if possible (i.e. a mild goat and sheep formula or very limited amounts of an organic, soy formula) or make your own formula from recipes at the Weston Price Foundation.

Treating Diaper Rash - Baby Bottle

Other than breast milk or appropriate formula, children should drink only water or kid-friendly and healthy cooled herbal teas (i.e. organic peppermint). Any natural baby food—either homemade or purchased—should be yeast/sugar free. If food intolerances seem likely, move to a simple dietary plan with only a few food items (i.e. brown rice, lamb, vegetables) for a number of days until rash clears and then gradually re-introduce one healthy food item at a time and monitor for responses.

For adults experiencing diaper rash, the information on Candida should be reviewed and if Candida overgrowth symptoms and survey indicate, a Candida Cleanse, both with regard to dietary plan as well as supplements taken to reduce amount of Candida Albicans overgrowth.

Daily Nutritional Supplements to Consider

Recommended dosages of particular supplements vary by age and circumstance (amounts given here are for younger children, adults should adjust accordingly), and should be discussed individually with a qualified nutritionist or health care practitioner. In general, however, supplements that can be helpful in the holistic management of diaper rash include:

  • Essential fatty acids (omega 3 oils-especially EPA found in krill and fish oil—as well as omega 6 oils found in evening primrose oil, may increase health of cell membranes and relieve symptoms)
  • Greens/probiotics (¼-½ teaspoon-an organic super green food/probiotic helps with healthy re-colonization of the intestinal tract)
  • Probiotics specifically formulated for infants (if candida symptoms are present, ¼-½ teaspoon in 2-4 ounces of water, 1-2 times daily on an empty stomach)
  • Silver Shield (if candida symptoms are present, per directions for age of child or per adult dosage for adult diaper rash).

Topical Recommendations

As one uses nutrition and supplementation to help bring correction internally, there are a variety of natural products and practises that can help topically with diaper rash. If diaper rash is a result of chafing, change diaper type (i.e. from cloth to natural disposable), size or diaper coverings.

Intolerances to soaps or the ingredients found in conventional wipes make the use of plain water and baby wash cloths for cleaning of the diaper area a natural cures for diaper rash choice. If soap is needed at times, use a gentle certified organic cleanser.

Use a natural protective cream (i.e. containing zinc oxide) as well—protecting your baby's skin with a healthy barrier cream enhances the skin's ability to protect itself again potential triggers and allows the skin to heal. You may need to try several suggestions (my favourite is Miessence's Baby Barrier Balm) or rotate products used to find what works best but natural baby skin care products are definitely the place to start.

As with any type of skin rash, if you use commercial skin lotions, shampoo or soap on your baby, avoid any products that contain synthetic chemicals. Natural cures for diaper rash protocol means ensuring your baby's skin care products are certified organic, simply made and contain ingredients known to be soothing to irritated skin.

Correcting the imbalance of good to bad bacteria in the gut and allowing the intestinal tract to heal through a diet full of nutrients and appropriate supplements is the first “begin within” step for dealing with diaper rash. By using only natural, healing products on the skin as a way of supporting the external factor in skin health, diaper rash can indeed be a distant memory.

Additional Recommendations

For childhood diaper rash, use properly sterilized glass bottles rather than plastic bottles for formula, and never use a microwave to heat bottles. Not only can microwaves unevenly heat milk and cause potential burns, but they denature the protein molecules in milk and cannot be guaranteed to kill all bacteria present in food being heated.

Home Remedies for Diaper Rash - No Diaper
An important tool in your natural cures for diaper rash tool kit is to be sure your child's bottom gets sufficient fresh air exposure as that can be very beneficial in managing diaper rashes.
Leave diapers off several times each dayplace young, non-mobile infants on several layers of absorbent material over a waterproof mat and give older toddlers room to play on a non-carpeted surface.

Finally, if yeast overgrowth is an issue, ensure bedding, clothing and
—for childhood diaper rash—toys are well cleansed of bacterial content. Use a certified organic cleanser that has the ability to kill bacteria and, if possible, air bedding and clothing for at least an hour in the sun. To kill bacteria on toys, spray with both vinegar and hydrogen peroxide, let sit for a couple of minutes and then rinse well and air dry.

Tackling yeast diaper rash and other forms of diaper rash requires a bit of detective work to determine causes and then some persistence in applying some of the natural cures for diaper rash. But be encouraged. Get the right combination of dietary intake, nutritional support and moisturizing and protective barrier balms
—my current top recommendations are the Baby Barrier Balm and Baby Bottom Mist from ONEgroup/Miessence's Baby Range—and diaper rash should be a thing of the past.
