Foods that Cause Acne

Are there really foods that cause acne? Yes and no. To discover the probable foods that contribute to acne in your unique situation, read on!

Foods that Cause Acne - Highly Processed Foods

Nutritional intake—the quality of nutrients consumed on a daily basis definitely plays a role in acne appearance and management. First, let's take a look at some foods that cause acne in many people, simply by virtue of the chemicals they contain and the stress they place on the body's elimination organs: the liver, kidneys, lungs and skin. Foods that likely contribute to acne in most skin problem situations include:

Foods that Cause Acne - White Bread
  • unhealthy fats (i.e. hydrogenated fats, trans fats, highly processed and/or GMO fats)
  • medicated protein (i.e. animal products containing growth hormones; instead seek out non-medicated, and grass-fed rather than grain-fed meat)
  • highly processed foods (i.e. meat products containing nitrates and MSG, cereals and snack foods containing artificial colours/flavours)
  • refined grains and sugar
As intake of unhealthy fats, proteins and sugar causes some of the body's organs (i.e. liver, digestive organs) to become overloaded, those organs are less able to keep up with their purifying and detoxifying tasks. The skin—our body's largest elimination organ—is often then called in to help. As it eliminates waste material, skin can roughen, dull, develop rashes and/or produce pimples and blackheads.

Foods that Cause Acne - Poor Quality Foods

Dietary intake of whole, natural and good quality foods goes a long way to providing the nourishment your body needs to produce healthy, glowing and clear skin. Conversely, eating foods of poor quality (i.e. lacking in freshness, laden with pesticides/herbicides, refined) usually means your body is getting an insufficient intake of the nutritious foods that provide the zinc, vitamin A and B-6 that contribute to healthy skin. Take the time to shop wisely, tracking down local sources of fresh produce, good quality legumes, nuts and seeds and naturally raised meat products. Good quality food may cost a little more, but think of what you will be saving by avoiding pop, chips, cookies and candy—some of the foods that cause acne.

Secondly, they often contain synthetic ingredients that then need to be detoxified and eliminated from the body, often via the skin. Thirdly, processed grain products or foods containing a high sugar content—highly refined sweeteners or even natural and healthy sourced sweeteners—can produce insulin surges and insulin-like growth factors that in turn can lead to an excess of the male hormones—androgens—that cause skin cells to secrete sebum. Foods that Cause Acne - Foods That Create Dysbiosis

Foods that contribute to Candida overgrowth can also contribute to acne. When there is an improper balance of gut bacteria, a fungal form of the Candida albicans gut microbe can start to get the upper hand in the body.

I've tried my best to apply the things I've learned from you and I have noticed some great improvements. I no longer chronically sweat and my acne is gone (had I known wheat made me have teenager skin, I would have cut it out years ago!).

Yeast overgrowth can manifest as an actual yeast skin infection (i.e. thrush, athlete's foot, yeast diaper rash), or can simply overload the body's waste management system and produce skin rash and acne as a means of elimination. Bringing dysbiosis into correct balance means eliminating foods that contribute to Candida overgrowth (i.e. fermented foods, grains, yeasted foods, sugars, fungal foods such as mushrooms, and leftover that are over 36 hours old), and, if Candida Survey scores are high enough, using yeast killers such as homeopathic remedies, Grapefruit Seed Extract or Begin Within Natural Skincare's own Candida Pack.
