Best Natural Skin Care Products
The best natural skin care products are a move towards purity, effectiveness and health.
Choosing natural skin care products and avoiding the thousands of synthetic chemicals found in most personal care product lines leads to great skin and is a good step towards improved wellness in general.
Natural? Not!
But first a simple "buyer beware". In the good old days, natural meant natural. If the term was used in conversation or written in reference to a product, everyone knew it described something that wasn't synthetic, that hadn't been altered and that was as close as possible to its original form. Not so today. Natural is often used to describe things that have had chemicals applied to them during their growing process or that have been synthetically derived from a natural ingredient or that have undergone a multi-step manufacturing process that can include problematic stages such as chemical bleaching and deodorizing.
When I say the best natural skin care products are a move towards purity, effectiveness and health, the greenwashed or pretend natural products are not what I'm talking about! Instead, I mean products that have an ingredient list of natural substances and where everything in the product is contained in that ingredient list (and I do mean everything!). I mean products that are INCI (International Nomenclature Cosmetic Ingredient) compliant, where ingredients are listed in a standardized, recognizable form. And finally, by the best natural skin care products, I mean products that are free of ingredients known to be health concerns. Consumers need to know exactly what they are getting in a product and need to be able to research the potential benefits and health hazards of everything they put on their skin. Then they can better determine if their natural skin care product really is what is says it is and whether or not purchasing that product is a good idea.
Why go au naturel?
It's simple. The best natural skin care products are:
- Better for your skin - many of the ingredients found in conventional skin care products and personal care products like shampoos, sunscreens, cosmetics and deodorants, contain synthetic chemicals such as triclosan, parabens, fragrances and oxybenzone. And of the over 10,000 ingredients used in personal care products, close to 90% of them have not been sufficiently tested for safety. They are either poorly tested (i.e. inconclusive or poorly conducted studies, no long term studies) or already proven to be problematic (i.e. carcinogenic, hormone disruptors, potential to produce birth defects). Avoiding personal care products that contain synthetic chemicals and choosing the best natural skin care products is a good thing both for your overall health and wellness as well as for the health of your skin.
- Better for the environment - using personal care products that contain ingredients that are certified organic or bio-dynamically grown means you support agricultural and manufacturing methods that both produce less environmental toxins as well as strengthen and heal the condition of our earth. Buying products that are free of synthetic fragrances, preservatives and colours means less toxins get washed down our drains and into the ecosystem.
- Better products - when I initially made the move from conventional to more natural and finally to Miessence certified organic skin care products, I knew they were better for my body and that someday my children would thank me, and other organic product consumers, for helping grow a green and healthy world for their own children. I have to admit, however, that I figured being kind to myself and the environment meant I'd have to settle for second best in the quality of my skin care products. Was I ever wrong. Because they contain ingredients that have a long history of skin health use across a wide range of cultures means most organic skin care products work even more effectively than conventional products, without any of the negative side effects of chemical toxicity.
Now I have the security of knowing I'm doing good for myself and the environment while at the same time, getting to be a picture worth a thousand words of how it truly is possible to not be getting older, but to be getting better!
Not Sure if You Are Ready to Switch?
Start by informing yourself about what is in the skin care products and other personal care products you already use. Go to the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep cosmetic data base and look up ingredients. There you can discover potential concerns with the impact your personal care products may have on hormone health, cancer links or birth defects.
While you are at it, check out the containers that surround your skin and personal care products. If they aren't glass or BPA-free (i.e. avoid hard, clear plastic bottles marked with a "7" or PC), they can leach BPA—bisphenol A—a xeno-estrogen and another ingredient linked to cancer. Then, if you really want to get scrupulous, check out the company making your products. Are they using green business practises? Are the containers and packaging materials they use recyclable? Do they source ingredients as locally as possible? If their ingredients or finished products are shipped long distances, have they ensured their company is carbon neutral (i.e. planting trees, paying carbon taxes)?
Once you have done your homework (because I don't have full control over ads placed on this site, do the homework even on products advertised here), moving toward the best natural skin care products (i.e. fewer potentially damaging ingredients such as parabens, artificial dyes, mineral oil) or all the way to certified organic skin care products will hopefully seem like the best bet. You and your skin (and your kids) will say thanks!
